The story would be horrible if it were not routine – even today, 30 years later. Amma (Smita Patil) and his son Benwa (Ranjit Chowdhry) become Bombay slum dwellers after emigrating from his people, after her husband kills a lender that it was a violation. The husband was shot after trying to steal a little tin to build a cabin.
In Bombay, Amma has a lover who provides for her and her son. As the lover is a truck driver who travels most of the time, Amma takes another lover – a pimp vain and petty criminal, Lukka (Naseeruddin Shah), who becomes Benwa idol. Lukka is on probation and ordered to appear before the police every day.
Benwa marries young Amli (Alka Kubala). Amma in turn become pregnant, although it is unclear whose son. Amma, of course, let Anna (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) know that is his, because she knows that her two lovers, only he is capable and responsible enough to care for her and her son.
Lukka reappears, ravaged by (syphilis) and drugs, but is now a changed man and is disenchanted with the life of crime. But he continues to live a life of crime and suggests that there is no choice for him. Even attempts to dissuade Benwa a life of crime without much success. Lukka is assaulted by police at his hideout liquor. The climax has a chemical attack Lukka who refuses to give medications unless you pay for it. Lukka take some medicine and make a run for it, is pursued by the police and hides in the cabin of Amma. The police find and arrest him and Benwa, severely beaten in the process. Amma has a miscarriage in the fray. In the end, the bulldozers arrive to flatten the entire neighborhood. A kind of exodus is shown in the final moments of the movie – and Benwa Amli and move to a new neighborhood and a slum hut again to continue with the CHAKRA
